At La Makha, the dining experience goes beyond the palate to become a complete sensory journey. The restaurant is not just a place where exceptional food is served, it is a space where design, light and materials come together to create an atmosphere that transports guests to the calm of the Mediterranean without losing sight of Colombian identity.

Design concept

La Makha is built on a clear idea: fusing the relaxed aesthetic of Mediterranean villas with the exuberance of the Colombian landscape, drawing on the traditional architecture of regions like Andalusia, Greece and southern Italy, adapted to the local climate and culture.

The restaurant aims to blend into the land rather than impose itself on it. Native vegetation, palm trees, olive trees and bougainvillea, weaves through stone and wood structures, creating a constant dialogue between what was built and what was already there. The line between indoors and outdoors is deliberately blurred: large sliding wood doors allow the facades to open completely, turning the main dining room into a covered terrace that takes advantage of the region’s breezes.

Architecture and interiors

La Makha’s design balances sustainability and comfort through passive strategies that reduce energy use:

Cozy restaurant interior featuring warm wooden walls and ceiling, where noble materials enhance the inviting atmosphere for diners.
  • Natural stone walls, acting as thermal mass, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it gradually at night.
  • High ceilings with exposed wood beams, allowing hot air to gather up top and improving cool air circulation at ground level.
  • Lattice screens on the eaves, shielding against intense sun without blocking filtered light.
  • Interior courtyards, inspired by Andalusian patios, with vegetation and moving water features that humidify and cool the space.

Material selection favors what is natural, local and handmade:

  • Coral stone, quarried regionally, in warm tones that recall Mediterranean coastal construction.
  • Guadua and mahogany wood, both Colombian, in ceilings, furniture and decorative elements.
  • Artisanal ceramics, commissioned from potters in Ráquira and Carmen de Viboral, reinterpreted through pre-Columbian motifs.
  • Linen and cotton textiles, in tablecloths, curtains and cushions, allowing air to circulate.

The lighting aims to recreate the golden light of a Mediterranean sunset. At night, four layers of lighting work together:

  • An adjustable general layer from the ceiling.
  • An accent layer that highlights artistic elements.
  • Low hanging pendant lamps over each table with visible filament bulbs.
  • Beeswax candles that add warmth and movement.

Color temperature stays between 2200K and 2700K throughout, avoiding cool or bluish tones entirely.

Atmosphere and music

The sensory experience is completed with layers of sound and scent. A high fidelity sound system plays acoustic jazz and bossa nova in the afternoon, and organic electronic music, from artists like Bonobo and Tycho, at night. In the restrooms and hallways, ambient recordings of waves, forests and light rain play at low volume.

Scent tells its own story too: in the entryway, diffusers release a blend of lemon, basil and fresh rosemary; in the dining room, the aroma comes from the table candles, with notes of sandalwood and bergamot, layered with what drifts in directly from the kitchen.

Moving through La Makha is part of the experience itself:

  • The entrance passes through an herb garden lit with low lanterns.
  • The main dining room is spacious yet intimate, with background noise kept low by jute rugs and linen curtains.
  • The terrace is the most sought after space, with rattan furniture, cushions in raw tones and cobalt blue, and canvas umbrellas.
  • The bar, finished in travertine marble, is the ideal spot for a botanical cocktail before dinner.
